Use Password Protect PDF

Your file and password are processed on your device and never sent to a server. The password is not stored.

How to use Password Protect PDF

  1. Choose or drag one PDF file that is not locked yet.

  2. Enter a password and repeat it, or press Generate random for a strong one. Set permission restrictions if needed.

  3. Press Lock PDF, wait for the automatic check to finish, then download the result. Keep your password.

How secure is it?

This tool uses AES-256, the same encryption as the PDF 2.0 standard. The algorithm is strong, but security still depends on the password: a short or easy-to-guess password can be tried one by one by someone who holds the file. Use a long password, or press Generate random.

Share the password through a different channel than the file, for example the file by email and the password by text message, so someone who intercepts one of them doesn’t get both.

Open password and owner password

The open password is asked for every time the document is opened. The owner password is used to change the permission restrictions, and only needs to be filled in if you restrict printing, copying or editing.

Permission restrictions only ask reader apps to refuse those actions. An app that doesn’t comply can ignore them, and anyone who can already open the document can still read it. What truly protects the content is the open password.

AES-256 or AES-128?

Choose AES-256 unless the recipient uses a very old PDF app that fails to open it. AES-128 is available for that case; its password is limited to plain letters, digits and symbols so old apps don’t misread it.

Questions about Password Protect PDF

What if I forget the password?

The PDF can no longer be opened. The password is not sent or stored anywhere, including by Tipamedia, so nobody can recover it. Keep the password in a password manager, and keep a copy of the unlocked PDF as well.

Can the locked PDF be opened on phones and other apps?

AES-256 opens in Adobe Acrobat X (2010) and later, Chrome, Firefox, Preview on macOS and iOS, and the PDF viewers on modern Android. If the recipient uses an old app that fails, repeat with AES-128.

Is my password sent to a server?

No. The password and file are processed in your browser with qpdf (Apache-2.0), which runs as WebAssembly. Nothing is sent and nothing is stored.

Can I lock a PDF that already has a password?

Not directly. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF (you need the old password), then lock it again with a new password.

Do print and copy restrictions guarantee the document can’t be copied?

No. Restrictions only ask reader apps to refuse printing or copying; some apps ignore them, and a screen can be photographed or rescanned. Use the open password to protect the content.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so documents such as contracts, diplomas or payslips never leave your device. You can test it yourself: open the tool page, wait a moment, disconnect from the internet, then choose a PDF. With an ordinary PDF, the tool keeps working.

What is the maximum PDF size?

100 MB per file. This limit keeps the browser, especially on phones, from running out of memory. Files that large can feel slow; if it stalls, close other tabs or try a computer.
