Use Unlock PDF

Your file and password are processed on your device and never sent to a server. The password is not stored.

How to use Unlock PDF

  1. Choose or drag one locked PDF file. The tool checks what kind of protection it has.

  2. Enter the correct password, then press Unlock. For a PDF that only restricts printing or copying, no password is needed: just press Remove restrictions.

  3. Check the result, then download the PDF without a password.

Two kinds of locks on a PDF

An open password prevents anyone from opening the document without it. This tool can unlock it, but only if you enter the correct password.

Permission restrictions are settings inside the file that ask reader apps to refuse printing, copying text or editing. Such a PDF opens without a password, and this tool can produce a copy without the restrictions. The restrictions are only a request to apps, so use this only for documents you own or have the right to edit.

What this tool cannot do

This tool is not a password cracker. If you forgot the open password, the PDF cannot be opened here, and the tool does not try to guess. That is exactly what makes PDF encryption useful.

Other kinds of protection are not supported either, such as DRM or certificate-based encryption. The tool tells you if it meets one.

What changes in the resulting file

Pages, text and images stay the same as the original; the file is rewritten without encryption, so its size can differ slightly. Digital signatures on the document may become invalid once the file is rewritten. Your original file is not changed.

Questions about Unlock PDF

I forgot my PDF password. Can this tool open it?

No. This tool only unlocks a file if you enter the correct password, and it does not guess or break passwords. Try remembering variations, check your notes or password manager, or ask the sender for a new file.

The password is correct but it is rejected. Why?

PDF passwords are case-sensitive. Also check for a space at the start or end, Caps Lock, and your keyboard layout. The eye button in the password field helps you see what you are typing. Some PDFs have two passwords (open and owner); both are accepted here.

Is my password sent to a server?

No. The password and file are processed in your browser and are not stored. Locking and unlocking are done by qpdf (Apache-2.0), which runs as WebAssembly on your device.

Is the result the same as the original PDF?

The content is the same: pages, text and images are not changed. Only the password or restrictions are gone. Digital signatures may become invalid because the file is rewritten.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so documents such as contracts, diplomas or payslips never leave your device. You can test it yourself: open the tool page, wait a moment, disconnect from the internet, then choose a PDF. With an ordinary PDF, the tool keeps working.

What is the maximum PDF size?

100 MB per file. This limit keeps the browser, especially on phones, from running out of memory. Files that large can feel slow; if it stalls, close other tabs or try a computer.
