How to use Compress PDF

  1. Choose or drag one PDF file.

  2. Choose a mode: Keep text to preserve the text, or Rasterize for scanned PDFs. Set the quality.

  3. Click Compress PDF, compare the size before and after, then download the result.

When compression works, and when it doesn’t

PDF size is almost always dominated by images. A scanned PDF, a photo-filled brochure or a document with high-resolution images can shrink a lot. A PDF that is mostly text and vector graphics is already small, and there is almost nothing to save because there are no images.

That is why this tool shows the size before and after, and does not offer a download when the result is not smaller than the original file.

Keep-text mode or rasterize?

Keep-text mode finds the JPEG images inside the PDF and re-encodes them at lower quality and dimensions. Text, bookmarks and links stay intact. Images that are not JPEG, or are of a special type such as masks, are left alone.

Rasterize mode turns each page into a JPEG image and assembles them again. Heavy scans often shrink dramatically, but text can no longer be selected or searched, and metadata is not carried over. For text PDFs, this mode can actually make the file bigger.

Questions about Compress PDF

Why did my PDF barely change in size?

Your PDF is probably text or images that are already efficient. Try lowering the quality and shrinking the images, or use Rasterize if the PDF is a scan. If it still doesn’t shrink, there simply isn’t much to save.

Does text quality suffer?

In Keep-text mode, no: the text is not touched. In Rasterize mode, pages become images, so text sharpness follows the resolution you choose and the text can no longer be selected.

What quality do you recommend?

Start at 70. For documents that will be printed, raise it to 80–85. For just emailing or viewing on screen, 60–70 is usually enough.

Is my original PDF changed?

No. The tool always creates a new file; the original on your device is not touched.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so documents such as contracts, diplomas or payslips never leave your device. You can test it yourself: open the tool page, wait a moment, disconnect from the internet, then choose a PDF. With an ordinary PDF, the tool keeps working.

What about password-protected PDFs?

Password-protected PDFs can’t be processed with this tool yet, and it will tell you if you choose one. Unlock the file first with the Unlock PDF tool on Tipamedia (you need the correct password), then try again.
