What is a slug, and why does it matter for SEO?

A slug is the part of a URL that names a page, for example how-to-build-a-website in tipamedia.com/blog/how-to-build-a-website. A short, descriptive slug helps visitors understand a page before opening it, and gives search engines one more hint about its topic.

Google’s guidelines recommend simple URLs that use meaningful words and separate them with hyphens. Random slugs such as ?p=12345, or slugs full of symbols, are hard to read, hard to remember and easy to break when shared.

What makes a good slug

Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only. Avoid spaces, punctuation and accented letters. Write 3–6 words that describe the page, and don’t change it after publishing unless you really have to. This tool does all of that automatically, including turning “&” into “and”.

Questions about Slug Generator

What is the difference between a hyphen (-) and an underscore (_) in a URL?

Google recommends hyphens (-) to separate words in a URL because they are read as word separators. Choose a hyphen unless your system requires underscores.

Should stop words such as “the”, “of” and “and” be removed?

It is optional. Removing them makes the slug shorter and easier to read, but make sure the meaning isn’t lost. Check the result before you use it.

How long should a slug be?

There is no official limit, but short slugs are easier to read and share. As a rule of thumb, use 3–6 words or stay under about 60 characters.

Is it safe to change the slug of a published article?

Changing a slug changes the URL. If the page is already indexed or has inbound links, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one so rankings and links are not lost.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. Everything is processed in your browser, so unpublished titles stay private.
