Astronomical calculation under the new MABIMS criteria: a new month starts if, at sunset in Banda Aceh, the crescent altitude is ≥ 3° and the elongation is ≥ 6.4°. The official dates of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are set by Kemenag (Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs) at the isbat session and can differ by one day.

How to use Gregorian to Hijri Converter

  1. Choose the direction: Gregorian to Hijri or Hijri to Gregorian.

  2. Pick the Gregorian date, or enter the Hijri day, month and year.

  3. Read the result with the weekday, the pasaran, the Umm al-Qura calendar for comparison, and the key dates of that year.

How the calculation works

This tool calculates the positions of the Sun and Moon. A new Hijri month starts on the day after the first evening on which, at sunset at the reference point (Banda Aceh), the conjunction (ijtimak) has passed and the Moon meets the new MABIMS criteria: an altitude of at least 3° and an elongation of at least 6.4°. If they are not met, the current month is completed at 30 days. Kemenag has applied these criteria since 2022, replacing the earlier 2°, 3° and 8-hour criteria.

We checked the results against 23 official dates from 2024 to 2027, taken from government announcements and the joint decree of three ministers (SKB 3 Menteri): the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, 1 Muharram, Mawlid and Isra Mi’raj. All of them matched. Astronomical positions are calculated with the MIT-licensed astronomy-engine library.

Why it can differ by one day

In Indonesia, the start of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah is set at an isbat session that combines calculation (hisab) and moon sighting (rukyat). Other organizations and countries use different criteria: for example, Muhammadiyah set 1 Shawwal 1447 AH on 20 March 2026, while the government set it on 21 March 2026. Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura calendar is shown for comparison and often differs by one day from Indonesia.

The supported range is Gregorian years 1900 to 2099. For dates before 2022, the tool uses the current criteria, not the ones in force at the time. Treat the results here as estimates; for worship purposes, refer to announcements from Kemenag or the organization you follow.

Questions about Gregorian to Hijri Converter

How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?

Pick the Gregorian date in this tool. The result is the Hijri day, month and year, with the weekday and pasaran. Converting by hand with a year-difference formula is less accurate because the start of a Hijri month depends on the crescent.

Why can the Hijri date here differ from my calendar?

Calendars can use different criteria (Kemenag’s hisab, wujudul hilal or Umm al-Qura), and official month starts are set at the isbat session. The difference is usually one day.

What are the MABIMS criteria?

A crescent visibility standard agreed by the religious ministers of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The new version, used by Indonesia since 2022, requires a crescent altitude of at least 3° and an elongation of at least 6.4° at sunset.

What is the Javanese pasaran?

A five-day cycle (Legi, Pahing, Pon, Wage, Kliwon) that runs alongside the seven-day week from Monday to Sunday. For example, 17 August 1945 fell on a Friday Legi.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The calculation runs in your browser.
