Conditions and formula for zakat maal
Zakat maal is due when net wealth reaches the nisab and has been owned for one Hijri year (haul). The zakat maal nisab is equivalent to 85 grams of gold, so its value depends on the gold price. The zakat rate is 2.5% of net wealth.
The formula used: net wealth = (savings + value of gold + investments + trade assets + receivables expected to be repaid) − debts that are due. Zakat = 2.5% × net wealth, if net wealth ≥ 85 × the gold price per gram and the haul is met. Example: a gold price of Rp1,500,000 per gram makes the nisab Rp127,500,000; net wealth of Rp180,000,000 gives zakat of Rp4,500,000.
