Use URL Encoder & Decoder

How to use URL Encoder & Decoder

  1. Choose the Encode / Decode tab or the Parse URL tab.

  2. Paste your text or URL. To encode, choose whether to encode a single value (component) or a full URL.

  3. Copy the result, or read the parameter table on the Parse URL tab.

What is percent-encoding?

A URL may only contain certain ASCII characters. Any other character, including spaces and accented letters, is encoded as UTF-8 and each byte is written as a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal digits. That is why a space becomes %20 and the letter é becomes %C3%A9.

Characters with a special meaning in a URL, such as ? & = # /, only need to be encoded when they are part of the data rather than part of the URL’s structure.

Component or full URL?

Component mode (encodeURIComponent) encodes almost every special character, which suits a single value such as the contents of a query parameter. Full URL mode (encodeURI) leaves structural characters alone, which suits a complete address that still contains spaces or accented letters.

Questions about URL Encoder & Decoder

What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?

encodeURI keeps structural characters such as : / ? & = #, so it suits a full URL. encodeURIComponent encodes those characters too, so it suits a single value inside a URL, such as the contents of a query parameter.

Why does a space sometimes become %20 and sometimes +?

%20 is the standard URL encoding of a space. A + standing for a space only applies to form data (application/x-www-form-urlencoded), such as query parameters from a submitted form. This tool has a space-as-+ option for that case.

Why does decoding show an error?

The text contains a percent sign that is not followed by two valid hexadecimal digits, or a byte sequence that is not valid UTF-8. Check for a stray % character.

Are accented letters and emoji supported?

Yes. Every Unicode character is encoded as UTF-8 before the percent signs are added, so the result follows the standard.

Is my URL sent to a server?

No. Encoding, decoding and parsing all run in your browser.
