Use Base64 Encode & Decode

How to use Base64 Encode & Decode

  1. Choose Encode or Decode, then choose the source: text or file (for encoding).

  2. Paste your text, or choose a file. Turn on the URL-safe option if the result will be used in a URL or JWT.

  3. Copy the result. For a file, you can also copy it as a Data URI.

What is Base64 and what is it used for?

Base64 represents every 3 bytes of data with 4 characters from a set of 64 that are safe to send as text. As a result, the output is about one third larger than the original data. Common uses are embedding small images directly in HTML or CSS (Data URIs), email attachments, and JSON payloads or tokens.

Base64 is only an encoding, not encryption or security. Anyone can decode it, so don’t use it to hide passwords or secret data.

Standard and URL-safe Base64

Standard Base64 uses the characters + and /, which have special meanings in URLs. The URL-safe variant replaces them with - and _ and usually drops the = sign at the end. This is the format used in JWT tokens, among other places.

Questions about Base64 Encode & Decode

Is Base64 safe for hiding data?

No. Base64 only changes how the data is represented, and anyone can reverse it. For confidentiality, use encryption.

Why aren’t accented letters and emoji broken?

Text is first converted to UTF-8 before encoding, and decoded back with UTF-8, so every Unicode character is preserved.

What is the = sign at the end of Base64 for?

It is padding that makes the output length a multiple of 4 characters. The URL-safe variant usually drops it, and this tool can decode with or without padding.

What is a Data URI?

An address in the form data:image/png;base64,… that contains the file’s content directly, so a small image can be embedded in HTML or CSS without a separate file.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Files are read and encoded in your browser.
