Use UTM Builder

How to use UTM Builder

  1. Enter the full destination URL, for example https://tipamedia.com/tools.

  2. Fill in source (where the traffic comes from), medium (the type of channel) and campaign (the campaign name). Term and content are optional.

  3. Copy the resulting link and use it in your ads, emails or social media posts.

What each UTM parameter means

utm_source names where the traffic comes from, such as instagram or newsletter. utm_medium names the type of channel, such as social, email or cpc. utm_campaign names the campaign, such as year-end-sale. utm_term is usually for paid search keywords, and utm_content tells apart several links or creatives within the same campaign.

Rules for clean data

Google Analytics is case-sensitive: Instagram and instagram are recorded as two different sources. So use lowercase and one consistent naming scheme, with no spaces, and use hyphens or underscores. Do not add UTM parameters to internal links on your own site, because they can overwrite the visitor’s original session source.

Questions about UTM Builder

Which UTM parameters are required?

Common practice requires three: utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_term and utm_content are optional. This tool marks the first three as required.

Why use lowercase?

UTM values are case-sensitive in Google Analytics, so inconsistent spelling splits the data for one source into several rows. The lowercase option helps you avoid that.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

Not directly, but a URL with parameters can be treated as a different page. Make sure the destination page has a canonical tag pointing to the URL without parameters, and do not use UTM on internal links.

What if my URL already has parameters?

Existing parameters are kept and the UTM parameters are added after them. A #anchor stays at the end of the URL.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The link is built in your browser.
