Lorem ipsum is placeholder text whose words come from Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC), scrambled and cut up until it no longer carries meaning. It is popular in design because its word lengths resemble real writing, so a layout looks realistic without the content distracting from it.
Latin text is fine for showing the shape of a layout. To test how a page will really look, such as column width, line breaks and line spacing, English sample text is more representative because its word and letter lengths differ from Latin.
No. It comes from scrambled pieces of a classical Latin work, so it doesn’t form meaningful sentences. Use it only as temporary filler, and never let it reach a public page.
Repeated or short text makes a layout look tidier than it really is. Filler text with varied word lengths shows a more honest picture of how the layout behaves.
Yes. For Latin, the “Start with classic lorem ipsum” option makes the first sentence always “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.”
Each paragraph is wrapped in <p>…</p> so you can paste it straight into an HTML file or code editor without adding the tags one by one.
