How age is calculated
Age is calculated by subtracting years, months and days in turn. If the day of the reference date is smaller than the birth day, one month is “borrowed” and the days of the previous month are added. This keeps the result consistent with how we count birthdays on a calendar.
Changing the reference date is useful for checking age requirements, such as the age limit for school enrollment or a job opening, which is usually measured on a specific date rather than today.
