Word mode suits prose, such as comparing two article drafts or a contract clause: small changes in the middle of a sentence stand out. Line mode suits lists, configuration files and code, because a changed line is shown whole as one removal and one addition.
The tool finds the longest common subsequence shared by both texts, then marks everything outside it as an addition or a removal. It is the same basic principle behind the diff tools in version control systems such as Git.
Red with a strikethrough marks text that is in the original but not in the new version (removed). Green marks text that is in the new version but not in the original (added).
Word mode is comfortable for a few thousand words. For much longer texts, the tool switches to line mode automatically so your browser stays responsive.
Yes. Tick the ignore-case option and “Hello” and “hello” are treated as the same.
In line mode, spaces at the start and end of a line are ignored by default. In word mode, a change in the number of spaces is still shown as a difference.
