  • Facebook: Include og:image:width and og:image:height so the image shows right away on the first share. Images are cached by URL; to replace one, use a new URL.
  • LinkedIn: Recommended tags: og:title, og:image, og:description, og:url and og:image:alt.
  • X (Twitter), large image card: Maximum 4096×4096 px. Formats JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF; SVG is not supported. These figures come from X’s older documentation because its new page could not be opened when checked.
  • WhatsApp: og:title, og:description and og:url must be filled in, and <head> must be within the first 300 KB of the HTML. The documentation states that previews are not guaranteed to always work.
  • Slack: Slack reads oEmbed, Twitter Card and Open Graph tags, caches results for about 30 minutes, and does not follow robots.txt. There is no official image specification.
  • iMessage: Apple does not publish an image specification for link previews in Messages. Use the common 1200×630 px guideline.

One image for all: make it 1200×630 px, save it as JPG or PNG under 600 KB, and put important text in the middle. X cards use a 2:1 ratio, so the top and bottom edges may be cropped slightly. The 600 KB limit follows WhatsApp’s documentation.

How to use OG Image Size Checker

  1. Choose an image from your device. The width, height and file size fill in automatically; you can also type the numbers yourself.

  2. Read the result for each platform: “Pass”, “Needs attention” or “Fail”, with the reason.

  3. Fix the image as suggested (for example crop to 1200×630 px and compress to under 600 KB), then check again and set it in the og:image tag.

Why 1200×630 pixels and under 600 KB

Facebook recommends 1200×630 px (a ratio of about 1.91:1) and accepts up to 8 MB. LinkedIn recommends at least 1200×627 px with a 5 MB limit. X’s large image card has a 2:1 ratio with a minimum of 300×157 px and a limit under 5 MB. WhatsApp’s documentation asks for images under 600 KB with a width of at least 300 px and a ratio no wider than 4:1.

The overlap of those limits is an image of about 1200×630 px, in JPG or PNG, under 600 KB. Because X crops to 2:1, put important text and logos in the middle of the image.

What platforms do not publish

Slack and iMessage do not publish image specifications for link previews, so this tool gives no pass or fail verdict for either. The X figures come from the older Cards documentation because its new documentation page could not be opened when we checked; check again if X changes it.

Any platform can change its limits at any time and caches old images. After replacing an image, use a new image URL and clear the cache with the platform’s official tool.

Questions about OG Image Size Checker

What is the safest og:image size?

About 1200×630 pixels, in JPG or PNG, and under 600 KB. That size meets the limits of Facebook, LinkedIn, X and WhatsApp at once.

Why does my image not show up on WhatsApp?

The most common causes: the file is over 600 KB, the width is under 300 px, or the og:title, og:description and og:url tags are empty. WhatsApp’s documentation also states that previews are not guaranteed to always work.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is read in your browser only to find out its size. No data is sent.

Why are the edges of my image cropped on X?

X’s large image card has a 2:1 ratio, while 1200×630 px is about 1.91:1. That difference crops a little off the edges. Keep important text in the middle of the image.

What about Slack and iMessage?

Neither publishes an image specification. Use the same 1200×630 px image; this tool gives no verdict for them.
